The virgin Mary gave birth to a baby named Jesus in an animal pen. Out on a hillside, shepherds were tending their flocks and an angel appeared to them:
This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manager. – Luke 2:12 NIV
God promised His people a Sign, a Savior, a Redeemer. Seven hundred years later a bunch of angels said, “Shepherds, here’s your Sign. Go find your Savior.” Now, that is a long time to wait for a promise to be fulfilled by anyone’s standards. When God promises He will be with you, He means it – no matter what, no matter when. It is a promise sealed with the Promised One’s own blood.
Read Mary’s joyful song in Luke 1:46-55.
Mary sang for joy because this Promised Child was the fulfillment of God’s promise to her ancestors, to Abraham and his children forever. He is the promised Immanuel. God’s promise to us fulfilled. God with us.
